The Quiet Signs
Stress Is Affecting
You More Thank You Realize
By Mahiboob Syed-Vardhan, LMHC

Not everyone realizes they’re stressed.
Most people I talk to don’t walk in saying, “I’m overwhelmed.”
They say things like,
“I don’t know, I’ve just been off.”
“I feel more irritated than usual.”
“I’m tired, but I don’t know why.”
And when we start talking, it becomes clearer.
They’ve been carrying a lot.
Still working. Still showing up. Still doing what needs to be done.
But internally, it’s taking more effort.
- But internally, it’s taking more effort.
- Stress doesn’t always show up loudly.
- Sometimes it looks like having less patience.
- Getting overwhelmed by small things.
- Feeling mentally drained all the time.
- Sometimes it shows up in your body.
Tension. Headaches. Trouble sleeping
What stands out to me is how many people keep going through all of this without stopping to ask,
“How much have I actually been carrying?”
Because if you’re still functioning, it’s easy to assume you’re fine.
But functioning and feeling okay are not the same thing.
Sometimes the most important thing you can do is pause long enough to recognize, “This has been a lot.”
And from there, you can start to lighten it.
If this feels familiar, you don’t have to sort through it on your own. We can talk through it whenever you’re ready.
