When Your Mind
Won’t Slow Down
Even When You’re Tired
By Mahiboob Syed-Vardhan, LMHC

One of the most common things I hear is this:
“My brain just won’t stop.”
- Not during the day.
- Not at night.
- Not even when you’re exhausted.
Your body is tired, but your mind is still going.
Running through lists. Conversations. Responsibilities. Things you might have missed. Things that might happen tomorrow.
I’ve had clients say, “I’m so tired, but my brain is wide awake.”
And honestly, that’s exactly what it feels like.
Your mind keeps scanning.
Because somewhere along the way, it learned that staying on top of everything is how you keep things from falling apart.
That kind of thinking helps you get through life.
But no one teaches you how to turn it off.
So, your brain keeps going… even when you don’t need it to.
And then people try to fix it by saying, “I just need to stop thinking.”
That almost never works.
The brain doesn’t respond well to commands like that.
Instead, I usually say this.
- You don’t need to stop your thoughts.
- You need to stop following every single one.
Let them come and go without turning each one into a full conversation.
Your mind doesn’t need to solve everything tonight.
Sometimes it just needs permission to rest.
If this feels familiar, you don’t have to sort through it on your own. We can talk through it whenever you’re ready.
